Schans Dorpveld

Creepy Travels – Back To A Haunted Fortification – Part 1

In the summer of 2011, Vanessa Morgan, Lars and I paid a visit to a movie location in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. It was a fortification built in the beginning of the 20th century, surrounded oddly enough by holiday cottages. You can find the original posts here, here and also here.

When I transferred the pictures from my camera to my laptop, I noticed some strange things… Things I still cannot explain… On some of the pictures of the holiday cottage, for example, there were orbs. I  was really surprised by this because until then I had always believed you could only photograph them during the evening and the evening. But some of the pictures inside the fortification were even stranger.

On the ground floor of the fortification, we couldn’t take any pictures because with all the junk around us it was simply too dark. We had more luck though on the first floor. I remember very clearly that in every room of that floor there was a chair surrounded by candles. Guess what? On some of the pictures, the candles were simply… gone. Yes, just gone. Moreover, as a joke, the three of us had placed ourselves with our back towards a window with the sunshine streaming in, thus creating cool shadows on the opposite walls. Except that when I put the picture on my laptop, our shadows were gone… I still think that it is so weird that on my “ghost pictures” strange things had disappeared instead of appeared.

Since then, I have been thinking about this place numerous times and not so long ago, I told Vanessa I would love to go back. Not only did I want to photograph it again, but also make a video. The fortification is located on a private domain though, but luckily a friend of her still lives there, so we easily gained permission again.

In this first part, we will concentrate on the pictures I took outside. But before I show them to you, there is one thing you have to know. Before I leave the house, I make sure that I have set up my camera with the right settings, except for the white balance and the ISO, which I configure once I am there… Imagine my surprise when one of my first pictures looked this:

During the whole shoot, I had problems focusing the camera, even with simple shots like this one. Curiously enough, when I used the camera a couple of days later, with exactly the same settings, I did not have any problems whatsoever. Anyway, this sign was new and mentions the name of the fortification: Schans Dorpsveld. In 1914, after one week of fighting, the Germans captured it on their way to Antwerp.

Anyway, this is what we saw when we entered the fortification island.

The building still looked as impressive as the first time I visited it. How lucky we were to be able to come back here!

Our attention quickly shifted to some of the cottages on the domain. They looked sad and dilapidated…

We quickly found the cottage where the crew had filmed the death of Avalon (Vanessa’s cat). But my camera refused to work… I was growing frustrated and kept on my checking my equipment. Lars in the meantime pointed out something else. During our first visit, we had noticed a couple of white peacocks. This time we saw a handful of the “normal” variant, but again I couldn’t focus my camera on them…

Anyway, Vanessa suggested that the three of us took the time to walk around the fortification and photograph it from more angles. Not a bad idea…

The next part will take you inside the fortification, where a lot of surprises were awaiting us…
